4 dead, 6 missing after fishing trawler sinks off southern coast in South Korea
A tragic incident unfolded in the waters near the island of Habaek, off the coast of Yeosu in South Korea, as a fishing vessel carrying eight South Koreans, three Vietnamese, and three Indonesians capsized. The vessel, weighing 139 tons, was reported missing in the early hours of the morning, leading to a rescue operation by the Coast Guard and other fishing boats.
Rescue Efforts and Casualties
Despite the valiant efforts of the Coast Guard and fishing boats, four South Koreans, including the 66-year-old captain, lost their lives in the accident. Eight crew members were rescued, with five of them, including the captain, two Vietnamese, and two Indonesians, found on a life raft. Tragically, one of the rescued South Koreans was later pronounced dead after being found unconscious in the waters.
Investigation and Support
One of the survivors mentioned that the vessel capsized due to the strong wind and waves, prompting authorities to launch an investigation into the exact cause of the accident. The two rescued Indonesian crew members have been taken to the Coast Guard’s office in Yeosu for questioning, while the Vietnamese nationals are receiving treatment at a nearby hospital for hypothermia.
Search Operation and Safety Concerns
The Coast Guard has mobilized a significant operation, deploying 23 vessels and eight aircraft, along with assistance from other agencies and fishing vessels, to locate the missing crew members. During the search efforts, a Coast Guard high-speed boat capsized due to rough waves, highlighting the dangerous conditions faced by rescue teams.
