CSDC’s Ammonia-Fueled Tanker Design Wins Approval at Posidonia 2024

June 5, 2024, Athens — At the prestigious Posidonia 2024 international shipping exhibition in Athens, Greece, the China Ship Design & Research Centre (CSDC) achieved a significant milestone. CSDC was awarded Approval in Principle (AiP) by Bureau Veritas (BV) for its innovative ammonia-fueled MR chemical tanker design. This project is a highlight of CSDC’s VENUS series of tankers, aiming to meet stringent environmental standards and offer sustainable solutions for the maritime industry.

Pioneering Sustainable Ship Design

CSDC has long been at the forefront of innovation and sustainability in ship design. This latest collaboration with BV reinforces the technical and professional capabilities of both organizations. The ammonia-fueled MR chemical tanker incorporates advanced technology to enhance safety, reliability, and environmental performance.

Key Features of the Ammonia-Fueled MR Chemical Tanker Design:

  • Advanced Ammonia Fuel System: Drawing from CSDC’s extensive experience with ammonia fuel designs for NEWCASTLEMAX and ULTRAMAX vessels, this tanker employs a sophisticated ammonia fuel storage and supply system. This system ensures safe and efficient fuel use, prioritizing operational safety and environmental benefits.
  • Efficient Power System: The tanker is equipped with the WINGD6X52DF-A ammonia-powered dual-fuel engine and an efficient propulsion system. This setup, which includes a shaft generator system, significantly boosts the vessel’s energy efficiency and performance, enabling it to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Flexible Cargo Loading Capacity: Designed in collaboration with leading chemical tanker operation experts, the ship can be flexibly configured to meet diverse cargo needs. This adaptability makes it suitable for transporting a wide range of chemicals, enhancing its operational versatility.

A New Era for Ammonia-Fueled Vessels

The Approval in Principle from Bureau Veritas marks a crucial step forward for ammonia-fueled vessel development. This collaboration between CSDC and BV opens new opportunities for innovation in sustainable ship design. BV will continue to work closely with CSDC and other stakeholders to refine and optimize ammonia-fueled ship designs, driving the maritime industry towards a greener, more sustainable future.
