Brazilian Navy Advances Fleet with First Tamandaré-Class Frigate Launch
On August 9, 2024, the Brazilian Navy marked a key step in its fleet modernization by launching the first Tamandaré-class frigate, named F200 Tamandaré, at the ThyssenKrupp Estaleiro Brasil Sul shipyard in Santa Catarina. This new class of frigates is an important part of Brazil’s Corvettes Class Programme (CCT), which is focused on strengthening national defense and protecting the country’s vast natural resources.

The F200 Tamandaré is expected to be operational by the end of 2024, with additional ships from the same class scheduled for delivery by 2029. These frigates are designed to enhance Brazil’s defense capabilities, particularly in the Blue Amazon region, which covers more than 4.5 million square kilometers of maritime territory. They will help secure this area and enable the Navy to respond effectively to various threats at sea.
The Tamandaré-class frigates are built on the MEKO A100 design and are equipped with advanced stealth features to reduce radar detection. These multi-mission ships, developed by the Águas Azuis consortium—comprising Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Embraer Defense & Security, and Atech—are intended for roles such as escort duties, protecting maritime traffic, and conducting humanitarian missions. Each vessel is armed with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, including the Sea Ceptor missile system and MANSUP anti-ship missiles, making them a crucial asset in Brazil’s naval strategy.
