Cargo Ship Runs Aground On St. Lawrence Seaway Near Montreal Blocking Maritime Traffic
A cargo ship that experienced a mechanical malfunction and ran aground south of Montreal has blocked a portion of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
The incident happened on Thursday night and stopped ships from passing near Kahnawake, a Mohawk region.
The Dutch ship Heemskerkgraacht was headed for Spain when it broke down and drifted close to the shore, becoming stranded as it turned around to head back to Montreal via Lake Saint-Louis.
Six ships have already been impacted by the blockade on the South Shore Canal, and intentions are to relocate the ship by noon today. These ships are sailing towards the St. Lawrence River, which is close to Montreal Port, or Lake Saint-Louis.
Fortunately, there was minimal environmental risk and no reported casualties despite the 138-meter ship being filled with scrap metal.
