OOCL and partners drive low-carbon shipping with biofuel

Collaborative Effort Promotes Low-Carbon Shipping with Biofuel Integration

OOCL, in collaboration with partners such as IKEA and Kyocera, is advancing efforts to reduce carbon emissions in the shipping industry through the adoption of cleaner fuels. This partnership marks a significant step towards minimizing the environmental impact of global supply chains.

The initiative’s first voyage, launched in early August, utilized a B24 biofuel blend that includes ISCC-certified Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester mixed with Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO). By replacing traditional fossil fuels with biofuel, the project aims to reduce carbon emissions in shipping, offering a transitional solution as the industry moves towards long-term decarbonization.

The carbon savings from this voyage are credited to the participating partners, who receive a Green Certificate as proof of their efforts to lower their carbon footprint. The process is verified by the Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), a non-profit blockchain consortium, ensuring accurate tracking and allocation of carbon emission savings. OOCL’s use of the Well-to-Wake approach further supports the credibility of this initiative by measuring the lifecycle carbon emissions from fuel production to consumption during ship operations.

Since 2023, OOCL has integrated biofuel into several of its vessels as part of a broader strategy to support the transition to a more sustainable and low-carbon shipping industry.
