Union Maritime and BAR Tech Lead On Wind Propulsion
Union Maritime Pioneers Wind Propulsion in Global Shipping
Union Maritime is making significant strides in advancing wind propulsion technology within the global shipping industry. By collaborating with BAR Technologies, the company is integrating WindWings® rigid sail technology into its fleet. This innovative approach is designed to harness wind power, resulting in daily savings of 1.5 tonnes of fuel per wing, alongside substantial reductions in CO2 emissions on typical global routes.
The adoption of wind propulsion is set to benefit 34 newbuild vessels in Union Maritime’s fleet, which includes 14 LR2s, 12 chemical tankers, and 8 MRs. The environmental and economic advantages are clear, offering shipowners, charterers, and the broader shipping community reduced fuel costs without compromising on speed, efficiency, or service quality. Union Maritime’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its efforts to combine operational excellence with ambitious environmental goals.

In addition to deploying this cutting-edge technology, Union Maritime is working closely with BAR Technologies’ shareholders on a strategic equity investment, underscoring the companies’ long-term partnership and alignment in promoting sustainable shipping practices. This investment reflects Union Maritime’s dedication to corporate responsibility and its leadership role in advancing environmental efficiency in the industry.
Wind propulsion is just one aspect of Union Maritime’s broader environmental initiatives. The company is also introducing dual-fuel LNG engines on up to eight LR2 vessels and collaborating with BAR Technologies on the AeroBridge® superstructure, which enhances both efficiency and crew comfort. These efforts demonstrate Union Maritime’s comprehensive approach to sustainability in the maritime sector.
