DNV awards Norsepower Rotor Sails™ unique certification for EX-version in hazardous environments

Norsepower Receives DNV Certification for Explosion-Proof Rotor Sails, Advancing Maritime Safety

Norsepower, a global leader in mechanical sails, has achieved a significant industry milestone with the certification of its explosion-proof Norsepower Rotor Sail™ (NPRS™) by DNV, a leading classification society. This new Type Approval Design Certificate (TADC) is the first-ever for a Wind Assisted Propulsion System (WAPS) to be used in hazardous zones on vessels. This achievement highlights a new era of wind-assisted propulsion, enabling the NPRS™ to be safely installed on tankers and vessels carrying explosive materials.

The certification confirms that the Norsepower Rotor Sail™ meets stringent safety and performance standards required for vessels in hazardous zones. This approval streamlines the process for shipbuilders by reducing documentation and class approval discussions for ships equipped with the NPRS™. The explosion-proof design includes a pressurized air system to eliminate flammable gases, ensuring all critical components, such as the power unit and electrical cabinets, meet the highest safety standards.

Oldendorff Carriers to significantly reduce emissions by outfitting three Norsepower Rotor Sails™ to a post-Panamax bulk carrier

This achievement underscores Norsepower’s commitment to advancing maritime safety and innovation. The company has been at the forefront of the wind propulsion industry, and its ongoing collaboration with DNV has played a key role in setting safety standards. With this latest certification, Norsepower is poised to make wind-assisted propulsion more accessible to a wider range of vessels, contributing to decarbonization efforts and enhancing energy efficiency in the maritime sector.
