ABS will provide classification, engineering verification services for new FPU, subsea equipment.
ABS, a global leader in marine and offshore classification, has been chosen by BP to provide essential support for the Kaskida project in the deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico. This project involves creating a new semisubmersible production unit, and ABS will play a crucial role in ensuring everything is safe and up to standard.
What ABS Will Do
ABS’s main job is to give classification and engineering verification services for this massive project. This means they will check the design, construction, and installation of the equipment to make sure it meets all the necessary rules and safety standards.
But their work doesn’t stop there. Miguel Hernandez, the Senior Vice President of ABS Global Offshore, explained, “This project goes beyond just classification. We are also helping with engineering reviews and offering more services to ensure everything works safely, especially with high-pressure and high-temperature equipment.”
ABS’s Role in Keeping the Project Safe
One important role ABS will take on is being the Certified Verification Agent (CVA) for the US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE). This means they are responsible for making sure that the equipment meets safety regulations before it’s used. ABS has done this job for many other floating production units in the Gulf of Mexico, so they are well-prepared for the task.
BP also asked ABS to act as an Independent Third Party (I3P) verifier for high-pressure and high-temperature (HP/HT) subsea equipment and technology. This is another layer of safety, making sure that the special equipment used in this deep-sea project can handle the tough conditions.
Working with the US Coast Guard
ABS has also been asked to help the United States Coast Guard (USCG) by inspecting and approving the equipment for the Kaskida project. This involves checking the design, construction, and installation of the equipment to make sure it is safe for people to work with.
