Adani Ports & SEZ To Develop Multipurpose Berth at Kandla Port

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), India’s biggest port developer, is all set to build a new cargo berth at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat. APSEZ signed a contract with Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) to develop and manage Berth No. 13 for the next 30 years. This project is expected to be fully operational by 2027.

What is the Berth For?

The new berth, named Berth No. 13, will be used for multipurpose clean cargo, including container goods. This means it will handle various types of products while keeping pollution levels low. The berth will also add more capacity to the port, allowing it to manage 5.7 million metric tons (MMT) of cargo every year. This is a big step forward for the port’s ability to handle different types of goods in one place.

How Will the Berth Be Built?

Adani Ports received the Letter of Intent (LOI) in July 2024 to start the project. They will use the DBFOT model to build the berth. DBFOT stands for Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer, meaning Adani Ports will be responsible for creating and managing the berth and then transferring it back to the government after 30 years.

APSEZ created a special company called DPA Container and Clean Cargo Terminal Limited (DPACCCTL) to manage all the operations at the new berth. This ensures smooth handling of cargo and efficient operations once the berth is ready.

Why is This Important?

The new berth will help Adani Ports expand its services at Deendayal Port. Right now, the port mainly handles dry bulk cargo, which includes things like coal and grains. With Berth No. 13, the port can handle clean cargo, which includes containers and other non-polluting goods. This makes Deendayal Port more versatile and strengthens Adani Ports’ position on India’s western coast.

What’s Next?

The construction of Berth No. 13 is expected to be finished by 2027. When completed, it will not only boost the port’s capacity but also provide better services for shipping companies and customers in Gujarat and northern India. Adani Ports aims to make this berth one of the most efficient in the region, strengthening India’s position as a key player in global shipping.
