AMSA proudly celebrates World Maritime Day 2024 alongside the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Today, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) proudly joins the world in celebrating World Maritime Day 2024, alongside the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This year’s theme, “Navigating the Future: Safety First!”, focuses on how new technology can make ships safer and protect the environment.

The Role of Innovation in Maritime Safety

AMSA’s CEO, Mick Kinley, said that it’s important to act fast to take full advantage of new technologies. He explained that these advancements can help the shipping industry operate more safely and securely.

“We want to make sure boats navigate our waters in a cleaner and safer way,” he said.

With 99% of Australia’s international trade carried by sea, Mick Kinley emphasized the need to ensure that ships moving in and out of Australian waters follow strict safety measures. He highlighted that Australia’s waters are among the most beautiful and ecologically diverse in the world, making them important not just for nature but for the country’s economy and culture as well.

Australia’s Global Collaboration

Australia is committed to working with other countries to set the highest safety standards. AMSA plays an important role at the IMO, contributing to several international projects focused on safety and environmental protection. Australia also works with other nations on multilateral initiatives, like the goal to create a green and digital shipping corridor by 2025, part of the Singapore-Australia Green Economy Agreement.

Mr. Kinley also shared that Australia is improving navigation services for both international and domestic ships. A recent report, “Navigation Services in Australian Waters – Outlook to 2035,” discusses how Australia is preparing for the future by using digital tools to help ships exchange and understand navigational information more easily.

AMSA’s Focus on Daily Operations

While innovation is important, AMSA also remains focused on everyday operations that ensure the safety of ships and the protection of the marine environment. This includes inspecting ships, responding to complaints under the Maritime Labor Convention, and leading search and rescue missions when needed.

“Safety is our top priority. If any ship operators break the rules, we are ready to issue a ‘red card,’” Mr. Kinley said, reinforcing AMSA’s strict approach to keeping the seas safe.

Australia’s Re-election Bid to the IMO Council

On this special day, Australia also announced its plan to run for re-election to Category B of the IMO Council for the 2026-2027 term. The IMO Council sets global rules for ship safety, security, and environmental performance. Being part of the council allows Australia to help shape these standards to ensure the shipping industry can handle future challenges and changes, including protecting the environment, improving conditions for seafarers, and maintaining international trade.

Celebrating World Maritime Day

To mark World Maritime Day, the IMO encourages countries to light up famous landmarks in blue. In honor of the occasion, Australia House in London and several lighthouses along Australia’s coastline will glow blue this evening, showing the country’s support for maritime safety and environmental protection.

By focusing on safety, innovation, and international collaboration, Australia is helping to ensure that ships continue to navigate the world’s oceans safely while protecting the marine environment for future generations.
