KMB starts the water metro project in Mangaluru
The Karnataka Maritime Board (KMB) has revealed big plans for the Mangaluru Water Metro Project (MWMP), aiming to make travel easier and better for the people of Karnataka. The project is set to connect communities along the Nethravathi River (NW-74) and Gurupura River (NW-43), creating a new way of travel along National Waterways. The Mangaluru Water Metro will be a green, affordable, and quick way to travel, making it India’s second-largest water transport system, only after Kochi’s Water Metro.
This Water Metro will link different parts of the city, especially isolated areas from Bajal to Maravoor. People in these regions will find it easier to reach schools, workplaces, and other services. Officials also believe that this project will support local businesses and improve the quality of life for everyone in these areas. By connecting these communities through a smart and green water network, the Mangaluru Water Metro is expected to bring positive changes in transport and local economy.

The MWMP will be introduced in phases. In the first phase, the route will cover 30 kilometers, connecting key stops along the rivers. The priority route will start at Bajal on the Nethravathi River and end at the Maravoor Bridge on the Gurupura River. Along this route, there will be around 17 modern Water Metro stations, connecting important places like Someshwara Temple, Ullal, and New Mangalore Port.
The Water Metro will use special boats that are powered by electricity and diesel, which are designed to be comfortable and efficient. Each boat will have modern facilities to ensure passengers have a safe and comfortable journey.
To make sure the project is sustainable and effective, a Feasibility Report (FR) will study all aspects of the project. This report will look into costs, benefits, market demand, and environmental factors.
With these careful plans, the Mangaluru Water Metro Project is ready to bring a new era of transportation to Karnataka.
