NYK Makes Nature Positive Declaration and Joins 30by30 Alliance
Promoting preservation of the marine environment and biodiversity as important issues
NYK Takes Bold Steps for a Nature-Positive Future
NYK (Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha), a major shipping company, has taken significant steps toward protecting biodiversity and promoting a nature-positive economy. On October 29, NYK introduced its “Nature Positive Declaration,” inspired by the Japan Conference for the 2030 Global Biodiversity Framework (J-GBF). This conference, supported by Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, aims to bring together all sectors in Japan to tackle biodiversity challenges.
In another bold move, NYK joined the 30by30 Alliance for Biodiversity on November 13. This alliance, initiated by 17 groups from the public and private sectors along with Japan’s Ministry of the Environment, focuses on ambitious targets to protect biodiversity.
What Is Nature Positivity?
The concept of a nature-positive economy revolves around restoring and protecting biodiversity. It was a key theme at the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted during the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) in December 2022. The goal for 2030 is to urgently stop biodiversity loss and put ecosystems on a recovery path, paving the way for harmony between nature and humanity by 2050.
To achieve these goals, J-GBF encourages governments, businesses, and communities to work together and make public declarations of their efforts to protect nature.

NYK’s Key Biodiversity Projects
NYK has identified marine environment and biodiversity conservation as critical issues. Two standout projects highlight their commitment:
- Environmental DNA Sampling in Oceans: This innovative project studies ocean biodiversity to understand and protect marine life.
- Reforestation through “Yu no Mori”: Launched in May 2024, this project focuses on restoring forests and aims to be officially recognized as an OECM (Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measure).
What Is the 30by30 Alliance?
The 30by30 Alliance aims to protect 30% of land and oceans by 2030. NYK’s Yu no Mori project contributes directly to these goals by focusing on forest restoration and biodiversity improvement. By registering Yu no Mori as an OECM, NYK plans to strengthen its role in achieving these targets.
A Global Vision for Biodiversity
NYK’s efforts are part of a broader mission to align with international biodiversity strategies. Their participation in initiatives like J-GBF and the 30by30 Alliance showcases their dedication to building a sustainable and nature-positive future.
By taking these steps, NYK is not only protecting the environment but also setting an example for other organizations worldwide to join the movement toward a healthier planet.
