MOL, KEPCO Sign MoU for Joint Study of Liquefied Hydrogen Carrier
MOL and KEPCO Partner to Explore Liquefied Hydrogen Shipping
Tokyo, Japan (November 20, 2024) – Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) and The Kansai Electric Power Company, Incorporated (KEPCO) have announced a groundbreaking partnership to explore marine transport of liquefied hydrogen. This collaboration, marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU), is the first in Japan between a shipping company and a power generator to focus on liquefied hydrogen transport, a vital component in creating a hydrogen fuel supply chain.
Exploring the Future of Hydrogen Transport
Under the agreement, MOL and KEPCO will conduct detailed studies to identify the best vessels and operational practices for transporting liquefied hydrogen. Safety will be a top priority, with both companies reviewing international laws and regulations to ensure compliance and reliability in this emerging field.
Liquefied hydrogen is expected to play a significant role in achieving a zero-carbon society, serving as a clean alternative to fossil fuels. By working together, MOL and KEPCO aim to overcome the technical and logistical challenges of building a hydrogen supply chain, setting the stage for wider adoption of this innovative energy source.
