ADNOC, Jiangnan Shipyard, and DNV celebrate delivery of first large-scale Mark III Flex LNG Carrier in China
China's First Mark III LNG Carrier Delivered: A Milestone in Global Energy Shipping
China Celebrates First Large-Scale LNG Carrier Delivery
Shanghai, China – 29 November 2024: In a historic moment for China’s shipbuilding industry, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Jiangnan Shipyard, and global classification society DNV celebrated the delivery of the Al Shelila, China’s first large-scale Mark III Flex membrane liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier. With a capacity of 175,000 cubic meters, this is the first of six vessels in a groundbreaking series. The Al Shelila showcases some of the most advanced technologies in shipbuilding, designed to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.
Pioneering Innovation in LNG Shipping
As the global demand for natural gas continues to rise, LNG carriers are becoming essential for transporting this critical energy source. Building such sophisticated vessels requires expert collaboration. The Al Shelila is a testament to teamwork, featuring an optimized hull design, twin skeg propulsion for better maneuverability, and an air lubrication system that minimizes drag in water.
Equipped with state-of-the-art features, the Al Shelila uses WinGD 5X72DF-2.1 engines and an Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling (iCER) system to reduce methane emissions. Its Mark III Flex membrane cargo system minimizes daily boil-off rates to just 0.085%, ensuring maximum cargo efficiency. Additionally, its two shaft generators enhance overall energy use, while the Jiangnan Intelligent Ship System (JNIS) enables real-time energy monitoring and optimization.
Strengthening Global Partnerships
Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of ADNOC Logistics and Services, expressed pride in the vessel’s delivery, noting:
“Al Shelila symbolizes strength and grace, reflecting the maritime legacy of the UAE. Our growing fleet demonstrates our commitment to meeting the rising demand for LNG, and we value our deep partnership with Jiangnan Shipyard and DNV, who have played key roles in this achievement.”
Mr. Lin Ou, Chairman of Jiangnan Shipyard, highlighted the importance of collaboration, stating:
“Thanks to the trust and support from ADNOC, DNV, and our partners, we completed this vessel two months ahead of schedule. Jiangnan is committed to delivering the remaining LNG carriers with the same high quality, further strengthening our strategic ties with ADNOC.”
A Testament to Cooperation
Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV – Maritime, emphasized the significance of teamwork in complex projects:
“Success in the LNG sector relies on excellent coordination between ship owners, shipyards, and cargo owners. This project highlights the strength of collaboration among ADNOC, Jiangnan Shipyard, and DNV. We are honored to be part of this milestone and look forward to future deliveries.”
Norbert Kray, Regional Manager for Maritime Greater China at DNV, praised the collective effort:
“Delivering such an ambitious project on time shows the bright future for Chinese-built LNG carriers. We are proud to support Jiangnan Shipyard in this highly technical and challenging sector.”
Supporting China’s Role in LNG Shipping
DNV has been instrumental in helping Chinese shipyards build expertise in alternative fuels. In 2022, it established a dedicated Gas Carrier and Alternative Fuels Expert Team in Shanghai, offering technical support to ensure projects meet the highest global standards.
