Port Tampa Bay Welcomes PLRS Crane to Improve and Expand Capabilities
Port Tampa Bay has taken a significant step forward in enhancing its cold storage and cargo handling capabilities. The Port Logistics Refrigerated Service (PLRS) recently introduced a new Konecranes Gottwald Generation 6 Mobile Harbor Crane. This state-of-the-art equipment is already operational, having been put to work offloading fresh produce from the Dole Aztec, a vessel that arrived from Central America. The addition of this crane marks a pivotal moment for PLRS, as it aims to improve efficiency and expand its services in the refrigerated and break-bulk cargo sectors.
Enhancing Operational Efficiency with Advanced Technology
The new Konecranes Gottwald Generation 6 Mobile Harbor Crane is designed to be energy-efficient, which aligns with the growing demand for sustainable operations in the logistics sector. Nate Pitmon, Vice President and Executive Managing Director of PLRS, emphasized the crane’s role in enhancing the company’s capabilities. He stated that the crane will not only improve the handling of refrigerated and break-bulk cargo but also bolster heavy lift capabilities. This is crucial as PLRS continues to grow its customer base and explore new market opportunities.
With the addition of this crane, PLRS now operates three high-speed Gottwald models. This expansion is timely, given the increasing volume of perishable goods being imported and exported through the facility. The new crane allows for quicker turnaround times, which is essential for maintaining the quality of fresh produce and other temperature-sensitive items. As Florida’s population continues to rise, the demand for efficient logistics in the food and beverage sector becomes even more critical. The new crane positions PLRS to meet these demands effectively.
Strategic Location and Future Growth Prospects
PLRS operates from a strategically located 135,000-square-foot facility at Berth 219 in Port Tampa Bay. This facility is designed to handle large volumes of perishable cargo, including fresh produce and proteins. Currently, PLRS manages imports and exports from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Costa Rica. The facility features temperature-controlled warehouses with over 4,000 pallet positions and dedicated refrigerated rooms. By 2025, the number of reefer plugs is expected to expand from 250 to over 500, further enhancing its capacity.
In addition to its cold storage capabilities, PLRS offers a range of services, including on-site customs inspections and fumigation services. The facility is also equipped with a customs lab, allowing for efficient processing of goods. Its location provides quick access to major transportation corridors, including CSX railways and the I-75/275 and I-4 highways. This accessibility is vital for reaching other Southeastern markets, such as Atlanta and Charlotte, within a single day. As the Tampa/Orlando I-4 corridor continues to grow, PLRS is well-positioned to become a key player in Florida’s distribution hub for the grocery and food and beverage sectors.
Overall, the introduction of the new crane and the ongoing expansion of PLRS’s facilities signal a bright future for Port Tampa Bay as it continues to adapt to the evolving needs of the logistics industry.
