China Launches First Hydrogen-Powered Container Ship

China has taken a significant step towards sustainable shipping by launching its first hydrogen-powered container ship. This innovative vessel, unveiled in Jiaxing, East China’s Zhejiang Province, is designed to carry 64 standard containers. The development marks a pivotal moment in the country’s commitment to green shipping solutions, as reported by China Media Group.

Advancements in Green Shipping Technology

The newly launched container ship measures 64.5 meters in length and boasts a capacity of approximately 1,450 tons. What sets this vessel apart is its reliance on two hydrogen fuel cell systems, each rated at 240 kW. This technology allows the ship to operate without producing any emissions, making it a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil-fuel-powered vessels. In fact, the ship is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 700 tons annually.

The hydrogen fuel cell system is a key feature of this vessel. It is the largest hydrogen fuel cell ever applied on a ship, showcasing China’s advancements in maritime technology. The ship’s hydrogen storage system can hold up to 550 kg of hydrogen, which is also the largest capacity storage system used on any ship to date. This innovative design not only enhances the ship’s operational efficiency but also underscores China’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact through the adoption of cleaner energy sources.

The control system of the vessel integrates various components, including the hydrogen storage system, hydrogen supply system, fuel cell, lithium battery, and propulsion systems. This comprehensive integration represents a significant technological achievement, as these systems have been newly developed and implemented for the first time in this type of vessel.

Future Operations and Environmental Impact

Following its launch, the hydrogen-powered container ship will undergo a series of equipment installations and commissioning tests. The vessel is slated to begin operations on the inland transport route from Zhapu port in Jiaxing to Xiasha port in Hangzhou by 2025. This route will become China’s first green hydrogen-powered inland container transport line, paving the way for the broader adoption of hydrogen energy in water transportation.
