Qatar’s Naval Strength Boosted by New Fast Attack Craft

On December 23, 2024, Dearsan Shipyard, a prominent Turkish shipbuilder, celebrated a significant milestone in naval defense. The company held a keel-laying ceremony for two advanced 50-meter fast attack craft (FAC) designed for the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces (QENF). This event marks a crucial step in enhancing Qatar’s maritime capabilities, reflecting the nation’s commitment to strengthening its naval forces. The ceremony was attended by a delegation from Qatar, underscoring the importance of this project to both nations.

Specifications and Capabilities of the New Vessels

The new fast attack craft will measure 50.76 meters in length and 9.53 meters in width, with a draft of 2.1 meters. These vessels are engineered for high-speed operations, capable of reaching a maximum speed of 36 knots. They will also have a range of 1,000 nautical miles, making them suitable for extensive patrols in the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The design of these craft focuses on versatility and effectiveness in various maritime operations.

According to Dearsan Shipyard, the primary missions of these vessels will include surface warfare, air defense, and asymmetric warfare. They will be equipped with surface-guided missiles and a 40 mm cannon for engaging surface threats. Additionally, the craft will feature anti-air guided missiles to protect against aerial attacks. For asymmetric warfare, they will carry 12.7 mm stabilized and manual machine guns. The vessels will also incorporate an electronic support system for electronic warfare, enhancing their operational capabilities in the region.

Beyond their primary missions, the fast attack craft will also serve secondary roles. These include patrolling territorial waters, combating piracy, and addressing arms and drug trafficking. They will play a vital role in surveillance and search and rescue operations in both inland and coastal areas. The introduction of these vessels is expected to significantly bolster the naval capabilities of the Qatar Navy, allowing for a more robust defense posture in the region.

Strategic Importance and Future Prospects

The agreement between Qatar and Dearsan Shipyard for the construction of these fast attack craft was signed earlier this year during the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition (DIMDEX). This partnership highlights Qatar’s strategic focus on enhancing its naval defense capabilities amid regional security challenges. The decision to invest in advanced naval vessels reflects a broader trend among Gulf nations to modernize their military forces.

As geopolitical tensions continue to shape the security landscape in the Middle East, the Qatari Emiri Naval Forces are taking proactive steps to ensure maritime security. The new fast attack craft will provide the Qatar Navy with enhanced operational flexibility and deterrence capabilities. With their advanced armament and speed, these vessels will be crucial in safeguarding Qatar’s maritime interests and maintaining stability in the region.

The keel-laying ceremony for the fast attack craft represents a significant advancement in Qatar’s naval capabilities. As the vessels progress through construction, they will play an essential role in the nation’s defense strategy, contributing to regional security and maritime safety.
