Chinese Hospital Ship Provides Free Healthcare in Sri Lanka

The Chinese Navy Hospital Ship, Peace Ark, is currently docked at Colombo Port, offering free medical services to the people of Sri Lanka. This initiative is part of the Chinese Government’s Mission Harmony – 2024 program. The ship has been providing essential healthcare services since its arrival on December 21. Health and Mass Media Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa visited the ship on Wednesday, December 25, to inspect the medical services being offered.

Humanitarian Efforts Strengthen Bilateral Relations

During his visit, Minister Jayatissa expressed gratitude for the healthcare services provided by the Peace Ark. He emphasized that this initiative not only benefits the local population but also strengthens the ties between Sri Lanka and China. The minister acknowledged the long-standing contributions of the Chinese Government to various sectors in Sri Lanka, including health, education, and social welfare. This partnership is crucial for the development of both nations.

The Peace Ark’s mission goes beyond just providing medical care. It aims to deliver immediate humanitarian relief during emergencies worldwide. Since its construction in 2008, the ship has played a vital role in various humanitarian missions. By offering free healthcare services, it fosters goodwill and cooperation between countries. The presence of the Peace Ark in Sri Lanka is a testament to the deepening relationship between the two nations.

Advanced Medical Facilities on Board

The Peace Ark is equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities. It features operating rooms, intensive care units, and specialized medical services. The ship also has ambulances and helicopters to ensure swift medical assistance. Among the advanced diagnostic procedures available are CT scans, which help in accurate diagnosis and treatment.

In addition to modern medical practices, the Peace Ark also offers traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture. This blend of modern and traditional healthcare approaches caters to a wide range of medical needs. The hospital ship serves both Sri Lankan citizens and Chinese nationals residing in the country, ensuring that everyone has access to quality healthcare.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Defence Deputy Minister (Retd) Major General Aruna Jayasekara, Health Services Director General Dr. Asela Gunawardena, and the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong. Their presence underscores the importance of this initiative and the collaborative efforts between Sri Lanka and China in the health sector.
