Turkey Launches Ambitious Naval Shipbuilding Projects
Turkey has officially embarked on an ambitious naval shipbuilding initiative, marking a significant step in its defense capabilities. The Turkish Defence Ministry announced the construction of three major warships: a submarine, an aircraft carrier, and the first ship of the TF-2000 air-defense destroyer series. This announcement was made during a weekly press briefing and shared widely on the Ministry’s social media platforms. The ceremonies for these projects took place at various naval shipyards in Turkey, showcasing the country’s commitment to enhancing its military prowess.
Key Developments in Naval Construction
The steel-cutting ceremonies for the MUGEM (Milli Uçak Gemisi – National Aircraft Carrier) and the TF-2000 destroyer were held at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard. Meanwhile, the ceremony for the MILDEN (Milli Denizaltı – National Submarine) took place at the Gölcük Naval Shipyard. These events were attended by Turkish Navy officials and representatives from the shipyards, highlighting the collaborative effort behind these projects. According to the Turkish Defense Ministry, the launch of these three vessels brings the total number of naval ships currently under construction in Turkey to 31.
The Turkish government is focused on reducing its reliance on foreign suppliers by developing and producing defense technologies domestically. This strategy is central to Turkey’s long-term military goals, particularly in achieving self-sufficiency in weapons production. The MILDEN submarine, for instance, is a 2,700-ton, 80-meter-long diesel-electric vessel equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology. This feature allows for extended submerged endurance, making it a formidable asset in naval operations. The submarine will also be outfitted with locally developed weapons and systems, enhancing its operational capabilities.
Simultaneously, the TF-2000 air-defense destroyer project is progressing at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard. This project, which began in 2017, has undergone multiple design revisions to ensure it meets modern naval combat requirements. The TF-2000 is designed to intercept guided and ballistic missile threats while providing a full spectrum of naval combat capabilities. With a length of 149 meters and a displacement of 8,300 tons, this destroyer will be equipped with advanced weaponry, including a 127mm main gun and a 96-cell vertical launch system capable of firing various missiles.
The Significance of the MUGEM Aircraft Carrier
Among the three naval projects, the construction of the MUGEM aircraft carrier stands out as particularly significant. Once completed, it will position Turkey among a select group of nations capable of operating aircraft carriers. The MUGEM is expected to enhance Turkey’s long-range strike capabilities and its ability to project military power across regions. The vessel will measure 285 meters in length and 75 meters in width, with a projected displacement of 60,000 tons, making it more than twice the size of Turkey’s largest current warship, the TCG Anadolu.
The MUGEM’s design incorporates advanced hull technology, ensuring exceptional seakeeping, stability, and maneuverability. This adaptability is crucial for operations in various sea conditions. The carrier will utilize a short take-off and barrier-arrested recovery (STOBAR) configuration, featuring a single runway with a ski jump. This design allows for versatile operations, including the launch and recovery of various aircraft types.
Internal simulations have confirmed the reliability of the MUGEM’s design elements, which include a bow configuration that reduces fuel consumption and minimizes underwater noise. The carrier will also feature multiple take-off spots for different aircraft, including combat drones and manned aircraft. With only 22 operational aircraft carriers worldwide, Turkey’s MUGEM will significantly enhance its naval capabilities and strategic position in the region.
