Lithuania Launches First Hydrogen-Powered Ship
The Klaipeda State Seaport Authority has unveiled Lithuania’s first hydrogen and electricity-powered ship, a significant advancement in sustainable maritime operations. This €12 million ($12.5 million) project is a collaboration between the Port Authority, West Baltic Shipyard, and Baltic Workboats. The vessel aims to enhance environmental responsibility by collecting and treating waste from ships within the port.
Innovative Waste Management Solutions
The newly launched vessel is designed to manage various types of waste, including stormwater, sewage, sludge, and garbage. It features specialized tanks and a modern rainwater purification system. This system allows processed water to be directed into municipal wastewater facilities, promoting cleaner port operations. The ship has a substantial capacity, capable of handling up to 400 cubic meters of liquid waste.
Measuring 42 meters in length and 10 meters in width, the ship is equipped with a power system that includes dual electric motors, supported by 2,000 kWh batteries and a hydrogen fuel cell system. This setup enables the vessel to operate continuously for up to 36 hours without needing a recharge. Construction began in June of the previous year, with a keel-laying ceremony marking the start of the project. The hull is now complete, and work is underway to install essential components such as piping, insulation, and electrical systems.
Klaipeda State Seaport Authority’s director general, Algis Latakas, emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “We have not only launched a tanker, but also a new approach to port operations – cleaner, smarter, and more environmentally friendly.” This initiative not only showcases innovative technology but also strengthens Lithuania’s reputation as a modern maritime nation.
