India and Indonesia Explore Military Cooperation
India and Indonesia are advancing their military collaboration, focusing on the BrahMos supersonic missile system and aircraft carrier construction. Senior officials from Jakarta have expressed interest in India’s indigenous aircraft carrier-building capabilities during recent discussions. This partnership aims to enhance defense cooperation between the two nations.
Strengthening Defense Ties
The recent meetings between Indian and Indonesian officials have opened the door for significant defense collaborations. Indonesia is keen on India’s expertise in constructing aircraft carriers, a capability that only a few countries possess. This interest aligns with Indonesia’s broader strategy to modernize its naval forces and enhance its maritime security.
In addition to aircraft carriers, both nations are also looking to boost cooperation in shipbuilding. Indian defense sources indicate that discussions are underway to explore various avenues for collaboration in this sector. This partnership could lead to joint ventures, technology transfers, and increased production capabilities, benefiting both countries.
On another front, India and Indonesia have agreed to initiate negotiations for the BrahMos supersonic missile deal. Indonesian teams are expected to visit India soon to discuss the specifics of this agreement. However, the deal requires approval from Russia, as the BrahMos missile system is a joint venture that incorporates Russian technology.
India has successfully sold the BrahMos missile to other countries, including the Philippines, which placed an order worth over USD 335 million. The successful delivery of these missiles has sparked interest from several nations in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, including Vietnam and Malaysia. This growing demand highlights the strategic importance of the BrahMos missile system in the region.
The recent state visit of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to India, where he attended the 76th Republic Day celebrations as the Chief Guest, further solidifies the commitment of both nations to strengthen their defense ties. Accompanied by a high-level delegation, President Subianto’s visit underscores the importance of this partnership in addressing regional security challenges.
