Inland firm builds innovative green cargo ship sail
A manufacturing firm in Leicestershire is making strides in the shipping industry with a groundbreaking green sail. KS Composites, located in Melton Mowbray, has developed a new sail for GT Wings’ 66ft Air Wing. This innovation aims to reduce fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions from ships. The first sail, measuring 20m by 2.5m, was transported to the port of Hull for installation on a cargo ship. This project marks a significant step towards greener maritime practices.
Revolutionizing Maritime Fuel Efficiency
KS Composites has a rich history of 40 years, primarily serving the automotive and motorsports sectors. However, this new venture into maritime technology represents a significant shift for the family-run business. Managing Director Jamie Smith highlighted that while cargo blades have been in development for the past five years, they are only now gaining traction in the industry. The firm began full-scale production in May, focusing on design, patenting, and manufacturing the components necessary for the Air Wing.
The Air Wing features a steel center shaft and outer wing that harness wind power to assist in propelling vessels. This innovative design not only aims to enhance fuel efficiency but also contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of shipping operations. Smith expressed optimism about the future, stating that KS Composites hopes to produce more of these sails by 2025. The collaboration with GT Wings signifies a promising direction for both companies as they work to address environmental concerns in the shipping industry.
