Maersk Partners with Egypt for Green Ship Recycling
Maersk has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian government to establish a green ship recycling facility in the country. This initiative aims to reduce Egypt’s dependence on imported scrap metal while adhering to international standards for ship recycling. The new facility will be located at Damietta port, enhancing the region’s capabilities in sustainable ship dismantling.

The proposed ship recycling yard will span approximately 155,000 square meters and will be designed to accommodate vessels up to 230 meters in length. This facility is set to comply with the upcoming Hong Kong Convention, which establishes improved conditions for ship recycling worldwide. The project reflects Egypt’s commitment to enhancing its maritime industry while promoting environmental sustainability.
In addition to the Damietta site, discussions are underway regarding the development of other ship recycling locations within Egypt. This expansion aligns with Maersk’s long-standing commitment to fostering greener practices in ship recycling. The company has previously demonstrated its dedication to environmental responsibility, notably when it took over P&O Nedlloyd two decades ago, leading to the development of China’s premier ship demolition yard at that time.
