COSCO Expands Fleet with New Heavylift Vessel

COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers is set to enhance its fleet of semi-submersible heavylift vessels with a new order from Guangzhou Shipyard International. This strategic move aims to solidify the company’s presence in the offshore transportation market. The new vessel, which has a deadweight tonnage of 70,000, comes with a price tag of approximately $142 million and is part of COSCO’s ongoing expansion efforts.
Details of the Newbuilding Order
The new vessel is being constructed through COSCO Shipping Investment Development, a wholly-owned subsidiary based in Hong Kong. While the delivery timeline from Guangzhou Shipyard International has not been disclosed, the yard has a history of successfully delivering similar vessels to COSCO. This addition will bolster COSCO’s already extensive fleet, which includes over 150 ships of various types, among them approximately 20 heavylift semisubs.
In 2023, COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers formed a joint venture with Guangzhou Salvage, managing a fleet of 18 semisubs alongside Cosco Shipping Heavy Transport. This collaboration includes two of the largest vessels in the heavylift segment, further enhancing COSCO’s capabilities in offshore transportation. The company’s commitment to expanding its fleet underscores its ambition to lead in the semisub market, catering to the growing demand for specialized maritime services.
