A new residential cruise ship, the ‘Dark Island,’ is currently under construction, promising a unique living experience on the open seas. With 236 luxurious sea-view suites, the ship is designed for long-term living rather than short vacations. Prices for these exclusive residences start at £4.2 million, reaching up to £41.54 million for the most opulent options, along with significant annual fees for services and amenities.
Exclusive Living at Sea
The ‘Dark Island,’ measuring 748 feet in length, is being developed by the Scottish firm Clydebuilt. This innovative vessel will feature 236 suites, each offering stunning sea views and ranging from 420 to 2,690 square feet. Buyers can customize their apartments according to personal preferences, with pricing influenced by suite size, location, and view.
Purchasing a suite on the ‘Dark Island’ requires a substantial investment, starting at £4.2 million. The most luxurious suites can cost as much as £41.54 million. In addition to the purchase price, residents will incur daily fees to cover food, excursions, and operational costs. For example, the two-person Glencoe suite has a daily fee of £1,150, while the larger Hebridean suite, accommodating four people, costs £3,182 per day. This translates to an annual expense ranging from approximately £419,750 to over £1.16 million, depending on the suite chosen.
Clydebuilt emphasizes that owning a suite on the ‘Dark Island’ is not merely about acquiring a living space; it represents a lifestyle filled with freedom, luxury, and adventure. The ship will offer a range of amenities, including three restaurants, a spa, a gym, and various recreational facilities, ensuring residents enjoy a vibrant community life while at sea.
A Journey Around the World
The ‘Dark Island’ is set to embark on its maiden voyage in early 2028, starting from Southampton. The inaugural journey will be a three-year ‘Around the World’ cruise, followed by a ‘Voyages of Discovery‘ itinerary that retraces the paths of famous explorers like Christopher Columbus and James Cook. After the initial voyages, residents will have the opportunity to vote on future destinations, subject to captain approval.
While the exact itinerary is still being finalized, the cruise promises a variety of excursions, including hikes, Grand Prix races, and visits to the Olympic Games. Residents will have the flexibility to explore each destination at their leisure, disembarking and embarking as they choose.
