Cocaine Bust: 120 Kilograms Seized in Gibraltar
In a significant drug interception, Gibraltar customs officials have seized 120 kilograms of cocaine hidden aboard a Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier. The operation took place during a routine inspection on April 30, as the vessel was refueling en route from Brazil. The successful operation highlights the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.
Operation Details and Discovery
On the evening of April 30, officers from the HM Customs Marine Section boarded the M/V Great Zhou, which had docked in Gibraltar for refueling. Equipped with an underwater drone, the officers conducted a thorough search of the vessel, which extended into the early hours of May 1. During this extensive operation, four suspicious packages were discovered concealed on the ship’s portside.

After the packages were recovered, they were transported to the Customs Marine Base aboard the HMC Sentinel. Upon examination, officials confirmed that the packages contained a total of 120 kilograms of cocaine. Following the discovery, all crew members were interviewed, and a secondary search of the vessel was conducted. Ultimately, the ship was cleared to depart, but investigations into the drugs’ origin and intended destination are ongoing.
Authorities believe that the narcotics were not meant for Gibraltar, but the seizure has nonetheless thwarted a significant quantity of illegal drugs from reaching their final destination. This operation has dealt a financial blow to those involved in drug trafficking, reinforcing the importance of vigilance in maritime security.
Official Responses and Future Implications
John Payas, the Collector of Customs, praised his officers for their dedication and effectiveness in this challenging area of work. He noted that the investment in the underwater drone, acquired in December 2024, has already proven beneficial in enhancing operational capabilities. Payas also expressed gratitude to the Gibraltar Port Authority VTS for their coordination during the vessel’s movements within British Gibraltar Territorial Waters.
Chief Minister Fabian Picardo commended HM Customs for their successful operation, emphasizing Gibraltar’s role in the international fight against drug trafficking. He highlighted the government’s commitment to investing in customs operations to support their crucial work in combating drug crime, which yields positive results not only for Gibraltar but also for other nations affected by drug trafficking.
