Doun Kisen back at Nantong Xiangyu with newcastlemax orders
Doun Kisen Expands Fleet with New Newcastlemax Orders

In a significant move to enhance its bulk carrier fleet, Japan’s Doun Kisen has placed an order for three Newcastlemax newbuilds at Nantong Xiangyu Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering. The new vessels, each with a deadweight tonnage of 210,000, are expected to cost between $75 million and $76 million. This latest acquisition underscores Doun Kisen’s commitment to expanding its operations in the competitive shipping market.
Strategic Expansion and Future Deliveries
Doun Kisen, a diversified shipowner based in Imabari and owned by the Okochi family, has been actively increasing its order book in China. The company has previously secured orders for Kamsarmax and Ultramax bulk carriers at the same shipyard, with deliveries scheduled from 2025 to 2027. The addition of these Newcastlemax vessels marks a strategic expansion into a larger segment of the bulk carrier market.
The newbuilds are set for delivery in 2028, marking Nantong Xiangyu’s entry into the Newcastlemax construction arena. Known for its expertise in building Ultramax vessels, the shipyard is located along the Yangtze River and has established a reputation for quality shipbuilding. With nearly 150 ships listed on VesselsValue and an average fleet age of just six years, Doun Kisen is positioning itself for future growth in the maritime industry.
This latest order not only reflects Doun Kisen’s proactive approach to fleet expansion but also highlights the ongoing demand for bulk carriers in the global shipping market. As the company continues to diversify its fleet, it remains focused on maintaining a competitive edge in an ever-evolving industry.
