Capital Maritime adds to Korean boxship newbuild series
Capital Maritime Expands Fleet with $1.6bn Orders

Capital Maritime of Greece has solidified its position in the shipping industry by finalizing an order for two new 8,800 TEU containerships in South Korea. This latest acquisition brings the company’s total recent orders to 20 vessels, valued at approximately $1.6 billion. The new ships, part of a broader expansion strategy, are set to be constructed at HD Hyundai Samho and are expected to be delivered in early 2028.
Details of the New Orders
Capital Maritime, under the leadership of Evangelos Marinakis, has secured two LNG dual-fuel units, each priced around $140 million. These vessels are part of the optional slots the company had reserved earlier this year, as brokers report. This recent development follows an April order for 18 boxships, worth an estimated $1.26 billion, across HD Hyundai’s shipyards.
The current order includes plans for HD Mipo Dockyard to construct six scrubber-fitted 1,800 TEU boxships, each costing about $45 million. Additionally, eight 2,800 TEU vessels will be built at approximately $55 million each. Deliveries for these ships are anticipated between 2027 and 2028. The Samho yard in Ulsan was initially designated for four firm 8,800 TEU newbuilds, with options for two more vessels, showcasing Capital Maritime’s commitment to expanding its fleet and enhancing its operational capabilities.
