Shanghai Minsheng Shipping Orders Two New Container Vessels

Shanghai Minsheng Shipping has secured a significant contract with New Dayang, a prominent Chinese shipbuilder, for the construction of two feeder container vessels. Each vessel will boast a capacity of 1,100 twenty-foot equivalent units (teu) and is slated for delivery in September and December of 2027. The estimated cost for each ship ranges between $22.5 million and $24 million, according to industry sources.

Details of the Contract and Company Background

Shanghai Minsheng Shipping, established in 1985 as the Shanghai Branch of Minsheng Shipping, specializes in liner services along near-sea routes and offers both domestic and international container shipping within the Yangtze River Basin. The company is currently listed in shipping databases with one feedermax vessel, the Hai Men, which was built in 2011.

New Dayang, the shipbuilding division of the state-run machinery manufacturer Sumec, has an extensive order book that includes over 100 vessels, primarily consisting of ultramax bulkers from its flagship Crown 63 Plus design. The recent contract with Shanghai Minsheng marks only the second order for boxships in New Dayang’s history, following a previous agreement with X-Press Feeders in late 2021.

In addition to container vessels, New Dayang has also ventured into the product tanker sector, having commissioned four 50,000 deadweight ton (dwt) vessels for Singapore’s Adhart Shipping. These tankers are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2028, further expanding New Dayang’s portfolio in the maritime industry.
