Very Last Littoral Combat Ship Completes Acceptance Trials

Austal USA Completes Final LCS Acceptance Trials

Austal USA has successfully wrapped up acceptance trials for the USS Pierre (LCS 38), marking a significant milestone as the last ship in the Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) class. The vessel returned to port on June 11 after undergoing rigorous testing to ensure its operational readiness. This achievement highlights the dedication of Austal USA’s shipbuilders and partners as they prepare the ship for delivery in the coming weeks.

Significance of Acceptance Trials

The acceptance trials for the USS Pierre involved extensive evaluations of the ship’s major systems and equipment, confirming their functionality and readiness for mission operations. The U.S. Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) played a crucial role in these trials, overseeing the process to ensure that the ship met all construction quality standards and Navy requirements. Harley Combs, Vice President of Surface Ship Programs at Austal USA, emphasized the importance of this milestone, stating, “The completion of LCS 38 sea trials marks the achievement of an important milestone at Austal USA, the last LCS to go out to sea under our control.”

These trials are a collaborative effort, showcasing the expertise of various teams within Austal USA, including those in test and activation, program management, engineering, operations, site services, and supply chain management. The successful completion of the sea trials reflects the company’s commitment to excellence, as evidenced by the numerous LCS trial events approved by INSURV over the years.

Future of the Independence-variant LCS

With the delivery of the USS Pierre, Austal USA will have delivered a total of 19 Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ships to the U.S. Navy in just over 15 years. Notably, there were periods during the program when the company delivered three LCS vessels in a single year. Following its delivery, the Pierre will transition to its home port in San Diego, further enhancing the Navy’s fleet capabilities.

In addition to the Pierre, Austal USA is actively engaged in constructing seven additional ships for the Navy and Coast Guard. The company is also involved in producing modules for the Virginia- and Columbia-class submarine programs, as well as aircraft elevators for the Ford-class aircraft carrier fleet. This ongoing work underscores Austal USA’s vital role in supporting the U.S. Navy’s operational readiness and modernization efforts.
