IRISL rises to 16th in global container shipping rankings
Iran Shipping Line Surges to 16th Globally

TEHRAN – The Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) has made significant strides in the global shipping industry, climbing three positions to become the 16th largest container shipping line, as reported by Alphaliner. This remarkable advancement, achieved within a few months, is attributed to enhanced operational capacity, fleet expansion, and strategic logistics development, particularly through the Chabahar port. If this growth trajectory continues, IRISL could soon break into the top 15 shipping lines worldwide.
Factors Behind IRISL’s Rise
IRISL’s ascent in the rankings can be traced to several key factors that have bolstered its operational capabilities. The company has significantly increased its Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) capacity, which is crucial for container shipping. Additionally, fleet optimization efforts have improved efficiency, allowing IRISL to better serve its international and regional markets. The development of logistics corridors, especially through the Chabahar port, has also played a vital role in enhancing the shipping line’s connectivity and operational reach.
Despite facing decades of international sanctions, IRISL has successfully maintained its presence in the global shipping arena. The company has adapted its routes and formed regional partnerships to ensure the continuity of its operations. Furthermore, IRISL has invested in domestic ship repair and modernization programs, which have contributed to its increased efficiency and competitiveness in the market. These strategic initiatives have positioned IRISL as a key player in Iran’s trade policy, supporting the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and improving maritime connectivity through critical ports like Bandar Abbas and Chabahar.
IRISL’s Role in Global Trade
Founded in 1967, IRISL is Iran’s state-owned national shipping company, operating a diverse fleet that includes container vessels, bulk carriers, and multi-purpose ships. The company plays a crucial role in facilitating trade between Iran and various regions, including Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America. Its strategic importance is underscored by its ability to adapt to changing global trade dynamics while navigating the challenges posed by sanctions.
In the latest Alphaliner rankings, the top five positions remain dominated by major players, with Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) leading the pack, followed by Maersk, CMA CGM, COSCO, and Hapag-Lloyd. As IRISL continues to expand its operations and enhance its fleet, it is poised to further solidify its position in the competitive landscape of global shipping.
