Conversion transforms CSL Flexvik from bulker to hybrid self-loader/unloader
CSL Flexvik Launches as Europe's Versatile Marine Asset

CSL Group has unveiled its latest fleet addition, the M/V CSL Flexvik, designed to enhance marine construction and aggregate logistics across Europe. This innovative vessel, converted from a conventional bulker, boasts an 18,003 DWT hybrid self-loading and unloading capability. With its versatile design, the CSL Flexvik can efficiently transport a variety of cargo, including fine sand, gravel, and heavy armor rock.
Innovative Design and Features
Delivered on May 31, 2025, from Wulkan Shipyard in Szczecin, Poland, the CSL Flexvik represents a strategic transformation of a traditional bulk carrier into a specialized vessel. This conversion optimizes the ship for the flexible and cost-effective delivery of materials essential for infrastructure and offshore energy projects. The vessel is equipped with two gantry-mounted Sennebogen 870 electric excavators, enabling it to self-load and self-discharge with remarkable precision.
The CSL Flexvik features a sophisticated conveyor belt system, including a 45-meter discharge boom, allowing for multiple cargo handling options. It can offload materials directly using the onboard excavators or through the conveyor system, facilitating single-point discharge to stockpiles or transloading to other vessels. This capability is particularly beneficial for managing larger rock gradings, enhancing operational efficiency in marine logistics.
“CSL Flexvik brings a new level of operational flexibility to Europe’s marine construction logistics,” stated Louis Martel, CSL’s president and CEO. He emphasized that the vessel’s hybrid configuration and versatile rock-handling capabilities provide unmatched flexibility for project-based and industrial customers.
Key Advantages and Background
The CSL Flexvik offers several significant advantages for marine logistics. It can transport a full range of materials, from sand and crushed stone to heavy rock armor. The vessel’s multiple discharge options include boom discharge, direct over-side unloading, and vessel-to-vessel transhipment. This flexibility supports subsea rock installation logistics, allowing for efficient transhipment to other vessels while keeping subsea rock installation vessels in position.

Additionally, the self-operating excavators on board reduce reliance on shore-based stevedores, ultimately decreasing port time and associated costs. The CSL Flexvik has a notable history; it was originally delivered as the general cargo/bulk carrier Raba in 2012. After a series of ownership changes and an incident in Newfoundland in September 2022, it was acquired by a CSL unit in March 2023, renamed CSL Flexvik, and underwent extensive repairs before its conversion.
