Bunker Tanker Collides with Bulker Off Singapore
Collision Near Singapore Causes Minor Fuel Spill

On September 1, a collision occurred off the coast of Singapore involving a bunker barge and a bulk carrier, prompting a swift response from local authorities. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) reported a small fuel spill, which is expected to evaporate and break down naturally in the environment. Both vessels involved in the incident are stable, and no significant navigational hazards have been reported.
Details of the Incident
The collision took place around 5 miles offshore near Tanah Merah at approximately 9:25 AM local time. The bunker barge, Marine Dynamo, weighing 8,270 deadweight tons (dwt), collided with the bulk carrier Flag Gangos, which has a deadweight of 56,526 dwt. Following the incident, the MPA deployed a patrol boat, spill response craft, and a drone to assess the situation and manage the spill.
The master of the Marine Dynamo reported that the vessel had spilled Marine Gas Oil (MGO), which is used for its propulsion. One crew member aboard the barge sustained minor injuries, including bruises and sprains, and is currently receiving treatment onboard. The Flag Gangos, a Greek-owned vessel registered in Malta, was en route to Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka at the time of the collision.
The Marine Dynamo is a newly built hybrid electric bunker barge, launched in 2023 as part of V-Bunkers’ fleet. It features an advanced electric power system that allows for a reduction in auxiliary engines from three to two, along with a 480 kWh energy storage system. This technology is expected to decrease fuel consumption by approximately 20 percent, highlighting the vessel’s commitment to sustainability.
Response and Safety Measures
The MPA has confirmed that there is no impact on navigational safety following the collision. However, it has issued a warning to passing vessels in the area to remain vigilant. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure that the fuel spill is contained and that the environment is protected.
As investigations continue, the MPA is working to gather more information about the circumstances surrounding the collision. The quick response from the authorities and the stability of both vessels have helped mitigate potential environmental impacts. Further updates will be provided as more details emerge regarding the incident and the condition of the crew member injured aboard the Marine Dynamo.
