Curtin Maritime orders eight hybrid-electric tugboats
Curtin Maritime Invests $160M in Hybrid-Electric Tugboats

In a groundbreaking move for the U.S. marine industry, Curtin Maritime has committed $160 million to develop eight hybrid-electric tugboats. The project, a collaboration with Snow & Co shipyard, aims to revolutionize port operations by incorporating advanced electric powertrains. With an impressive output of over 4,000 bhp and a substantial 6MWh battery buffer, these tugboats are set to redefine maritime efficiency and sustainability.
Historic Deployment of Electric Workboats
This initiative represents the largest commercial rollout of electric workboats in U.S. history, according to Arc, the company providing the innovative electric powertrains for the tugboats. The first four vessels are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2027, signaling a significant shift in the maritime sector towards greener technology.
Curtin Maritime’s investment underscores a robust business case for hybrid-electric vessels, driven by the increasing need for environmentally friendly solutions in shipping and logistics. The project is entirely funded by private investments, reflecting confidence in the future of sustainable maritime operations.

Mitch Lee, CEO of Arc, emphasized the importance of tugboats, stating, “They’re critical for our national supply chains and defense logistics, yet are largely powered by outdated, unreliable, and harmful diesel engines.” This transition to hybrid-electric technology aims to enhance the reliability and performance of these essential vessels.
Martin Curtin, CEO of Curtin Maritime, echoed this sentiment, noting that the new tugboats will not only deliver the necessary power but also contribute to a smarter, low-maintenance fleet. This shift promises to bolster operational efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of port activities, marking a significant advancement in maritime practices.
