Historic Methanol Bunkering on Yangtze River

A significant milestone in maritime operations was achieved on the Yangtze River in China, where a Cosco container ship successfully completed the first-ever ship-to-ship (STS) methanol bunkering. The operation involved the Cosco Shipping Libra receiving approximately 2,000 metric tons of methanol from the bunker vessel Haigang Zhiyuan at the COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s terminal on Changxing Island. Remarkably, this operation, which typically takes up to 70 hours, was accomplished in just five hours.

Safety Measures During Bunkering Operation

The successful completion of this STS methanol bunkering operation is particularly noteworthy given the heavy ship traffic in the Shanghai section of the Yangtze River. Wang Yanhai, deputy captain of the Changxing Coast Guard Law Enforcement Brigade of the Chongming Maritime Safety Administration, emphasized the inherent risks associated with bunkering vessels, which are classified as dangerous goods vessels. To mitigate these risks, the authorities implemented stringent safety measures throughout the operation.

Wang stated, “We accurately monitor the bunkering vessel’s movements throughout the entire process to ensure surrounding vessels maintain a safe distance.” This proactive approach to navigation safety is crucial in an area known for its dense maritime traffic. The swift execution of the bunkering operation not only highlights advancements in maritime logistics but also reflects the commitment to safety and efficiency in one of the world’s busiest waterways.
