Lloyd’s Register Launches Biofuel Advisory Service

Lloyd’s Register (LR) has unveiled its new Biofuel Advisory service during the London International Shipping Week, aimed at assisting shipowners and fuel suppliers in the safe and efficient adoption of biofuels. This initiative seeks to address the pressing need for the shipping industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by providing comprehensive support throughout the biofuel supply chain. With over 20 years of experience in biofuels, LR’s service promises to enhance regulatory compliance and operational clarity for its clients.
Comprehensive Support for Biofuel Adoption
The Biofuel Advisory service is designed to eliminate uncertainties surrounding the use of biofuels in shipping. It offers end-to-end support, covering everything from production and certification to delivery and onboard usage. This initiative builds on two years of groundwork, integrating LR’s energy transition advisory capabilities with the technical expertise of its Fuel Oil Bunker Analysis and Advisory Service (FOBAS). FOBAS has a long history of collaborating with shipowners and suppliers to facilitate the safe adoption of alternative fuels.
LR has already partnered with leading biofuel producers to evaluate regulatory impacts on market demand. Additionally, it has assisted major bunker suppliers in creating transparent documentation for buyers and guided shipowners through the necessary testing and operational steps to implement biofuels across their fleets. This proactive approach aims to provide clients with the confidence needed to transition to biofuels, addressing concerns about performance, safety, and compliance.
James Frew, Director of Lloyd’s Register Advisory, emphasized the importance of this service, stating, “Biofuels represent an immediate and practical solution, but owners need confidence on performance, safety, and compliance.” The Biofuel Advisory service is intended to deliver clarity and assurance at every stage of the biofuel adoption process, helping shipowners make informed decisions.
Fuel for Thought: A Resource for the Industry
As part of the launch, LR introduced “Fuel for Thought: The Biofuel Briefing,” a comprehensive report that consolidates critical information on biofuels in shipping. This resource serves as a valuable reference for shipowners exploring alternative fuel options and for maritime professionals seeking insights into the zero-carbon transition. The report covers various topics, including operational considerations, regulatory drivers, fuel quality, and the outcomes of biofuel trials in the shipping sector.
LR’s “Fuel for Thought” series is recognized for its expert analysis and insights into alternative fuel sources for ships. Each edition provides a thorough overview of the latest technological advancements, policy changes, and emerging trends in this rapidly evolving field. By offering this wealth of information, LR aims to support the maritime industry in navigating the complexities of transitioning to more sustainable fuel options.
