CMA CGM expands UK footprint with Freightliner takeover
CMA CGM Acquires Freightliner UK to Boost Logistics

In a strategic move to enhance its European intermodal services, French shipping giant CMA CGM has announced the acquisition of Freightliner UK Intermodal Logistics, one of the largest rail freight operators in Britain. This acquisition will encompass Freightliner’s rail and road operations, along with its inland terminals and brand, and is expected to finalize by early 2026, pending regulatory approvals. While Freightliner’s operations in continental Europe will remain unchanged, the UK branch will operate independently, benefiting from CMA CGM’s extensive logistics network.
Strengthening Intermodal Operations in the UK
The acquisition of Freightliner UK represents a significant step for CMA CGM as it seeks to expand its presence in the competitive UK market. Rodolphe Saadé, chairman and CEO of CMA CGM, emphasized the importance of this move, stating that it enhances the company’s intermodal capabilities by effectively integrating sea, rail, and road transport. This integration is intended to provide more efficient solutions for customers while promoting lower-carbon transport options.
Freightliner UK will continue to function as a multi-user, multi-customer business, maintaining its current management team. This structure is designed to ensure seamless operations while leveraging CMA CGM’s global logistics capabilities. The acquisition is aligned with CMA CGM’s commitment to creating sustainable transport solutions that reduce carbon emissions. By facilitating a shift from road to rail, the company aims to significantly lower CO₂ emissions associated with freight transport.
With Freightliner’s established rail network, CMA CGM will enhance connectivity between the UK’s hinterland and major European ports. This improvement is expected to provide customers with greater flexibility in their logistics operations while supporting the broader goal of supply chain decarbonization in Europe. In recent years, rail freight has emerged as a pivotal element in the effort to create more sustainable supply chains, and CMA CGM’s acquisition of Freightliner is poised to accelerate this transition.
Expanding CMA CGM’s Reach in the UK Market
CMA CGM’s existing operations in the UK are robust, with an agency managing 28 services that connect the country to global markets. In the past year alone, the company has handled more than 800,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of cargo. Furthermore, through its subsidiary CCIS, CMA CGM moved an additional 200,000 TEU by rail and road during the first half of 2025.
