Algoma Central Corporation Celebrates 100th Vessel Milestone
Algoma Central Welcomes New Methanol-Ready Vessel

ST. CATHARINES, Ontario—Algoma Central Corporation has proudly announced the delivery of the Algoma Legacy, marking a significant milestone as the first of three new methanol-ready Kamsarmax-sized ocean belt self-unloading vessels. This addition elevates Algoma’s fleet to a total of 100 vessels, reinforcing its position as a leader in the diversified short sea shipping market. The company’s growth reflects its commitment to sustainable shipping solutions and strategic partnerships.
Significant Growth and Future Plans
Gregg Ruhl, President and CEO of Algoma Central Corporation, expressed pride in the delivery of the Algoma Legacy and the achievement of reaching 100 vessels in its global fleet. He emphasized that this accomplishment is a testament to decades of progress and the dedication of Algoma’s employees. Just a decade ago, the company operated fewer than 40 vessels, primarily focused on the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway. Today, Algoma has expanded its operations significantly, adding over 60 vessels to its dry and liquid bulk fleets, both in Canada and internationally.

The Algoma Legacy is set to join the world’s largest Ocean Self-Unloader Pool, with two sister vessels scheduled for delivery in 2026 and early 2027. These new vessels are designed to replace the oldest ships in the Pool, enhancing operational efficiency by approximately 40% through improved fuel efficiency and optimized cargo lift. This strategic move not only modernizes Algoma’s fleet but also ensures the company remains competitive in the evolving maritime industry.
Currently, Algoma has seven additional vessels under construction, with expected deliveries spanning from 2025 to 2027. This ongoing investment in fleet expansion underscores Algoma’s commitment to advancing innovative technologies and maintaining exceptional customer service in the marine transportation sector.
