NYK to Launch Japan's First Offshore Wind Project in General Sea Areas

NYK has partnered with Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy LLC to introduce Japan’s inaugural offshore wind project in general sea areas. The collaboration aims to bolster the country’s renewable energy sector and promote regional development through domestic vessel construction.
NYK has solidified a long-term time-charter agreement for an offshore wind crew transfer vessel (CTV) with Oga Katagami Akita Offshore Green Energy LLC. The vessel, to be constructed by Kosaba Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Kamaishi City, will operate along the coasts of Oga, Katagami, and Akita, marking a significant milestone in Japan’s renewable energy initiatives.
The vessel’s design, based on a model from Northern Offshore Services AS, will undergo modifications to facilitate local construction, fostering growth in Japan’s shipbuilding industry and employment opportunities. Managed by Japan Offshore Support Co., Ltd., a joint venture between NYK and Akita Eisen Co., the vessel will also contribute to the training and hiring of local crew members, further enhancing the region’s offshore wind sector.
By providing CTVs for offshore wind projects in key areas, NYK aims to support Japan’s energy stability while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable practices. The collaboration signifies a pivotal step towards achieving renewable energy goals and fostering economic growth in the region.
