Konecranes Unveils Hydrogen Straddle Carrier at TOC Americas

Konecranes is set to make waves in the material handling industry with the introduction of its Konecranes Noell Hydrogen Fuel Cell Straddle Carrier at the TOC Americas 2025 event in Panama City. This innovative straddle carrier will be showcased alongside the Konecranes E-Hybrid RTG and an electric empty container handler, marking a significant step toward a comprehensive range of low- to zero-emission products. The hydrogen-powered carrier is currently undergoing testing in Hamburg, where initial results indicate it matches the performance of traditional diesel and hybrid models.
Innovative Solutions for Emission-Free Operations
The Konecranes Noell Hydrogen Fuel Cell Straddle Carrier represents a pivotal advancement in heavy material handling equipment, as noted by Thomas Gylling, Director of Marketing & Customer Experience at Konecranes. Traditionally, hydrogen fuel cells have been limited to lighter equipment, making this development a notable milestone. Gylling emphasized that this initiative is part of Konecranes’ Ecolifting program, which aims to eliminate tailpipe emissions from container handling equipment through all-electric and hydrogen-powered options without compromising performance. The company is on track to offer all-electric variants across its entire Ports product portfolio by 2026.
In addition to the hydrogen straddle carrier, Konecranes is also highlighting its E-Hybrid RTG at the event. This innovative solution utilizes advanced battery technology along with conventional cable reel or busbar systems connected to the local grid. The E-Hybrid RTG primarily relies on batteries, which are charged as needed, providing a reliable alternative for container terminals that frequently experience power outages. This approach not only enhances operational efficiency but also offers significant savings on electrical infrastructure compared to traditional electric RTGs.

Konecranes is also proud to announce the availability of its electric empty container handler throughout the Americas. This state-of-the-art equipment features high-voltage technology that maximizes energy efficiency, allowing for up to 12 hours of operation before requiring a recharge. Since its initial launch in October 2024, deliveries of the electric empty container handlers have commenced in various regions, receiving positive feedback from customers.
With a strong commitment to customer satisfaction and continuous improvement, Konecranes is solidifying its position as a leader in the material handling industry. The company is investing in digitalization and technology to enhance operational efficiency while supporting the decarbonization of the economy and promoting circularity and safety in material flows.
