Small Modular Nuclear Reactors in Focus for ABS and KRISO

ABS and KRISO Join Forces for Nuclear Innovation

In a significant move towards advancing nuclear energy applications in maritime industries, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU). This agreement aims to foster collaboration on small modular reactors (SMRs) for marine and offshore sectors, paving the way for innovative energy solutions.

Collaboration Focused on SMR Development

The MOU establishes a framework for ABS and KRISO to share information and engage in joint research projects. These initiatives will focus on the design concepts for SMR-powered vessels and floating power generation platforms. A key objective of this partnership is to identify and develop regulatory guidelines and international standards that will govern the use of SMRs in these sectors.

Christopher J. Wiernicki, Chairman and CEO of ABS, emphasized the potential of nuclear energy, stating, “Nuclear energy offers unmatched energy density, reliability, and strategic independence.” He highlighted that this energy source is becoming a viable solution for various applications, including powering ports and producing hydrogen, both onshore and offshore. This includes innovative uses such as floating data centers, synthetic fuel platforms, and desalination systems.

Nuclear Power Could Revolutionize Shipping, Says Lloyd’s Register

Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at ABS, noted the importance of modern nuclear technologies in meeting energy demands across marine and offshore markets. He expressed pride in ABS’s leadership role in supporting nuclear power projects, leveraging their expertise in international regulations and safety requirements. Ryan stated, “We are proud to work with KRISO to continue these advancements in SMR applications.”

Advancing Marine Decarbonization Efforts

Keyyong Hong, President of KRISO, underscored the institute’s commitment to developing marine decarbonization technologies. He stated that the collaboration with ABS will enhance the application of SMRs in ships and offshore plants. The MOU aims to integrate the technological expertise of both organizations, ensuring a clear division of roles to accelerate progress in core SMR technologies.

As the marine and offshore industries increasingly turn to nuclear energy, ABS is at the forefront of facilitating its safe implementation. This partnership with KRISO marks a pivotal step in harnessing nuclear power’s potential to transform energy use in maritime operations, contributing to a more sustainable future.
