Chile Launches First Hybrid-Electric Cruise Ship
Antarctica21 Launches the Americas' First Hybrid-Electric Polar Cruise Ship
In a momentous event at the ASENAV shipyard in Valdivia, Antarctica21 proudly unveiled the Magellan Discoverer, marking the first hybrid-electric expedition cruise ship constructed in the Americas. This groundbreaking vessel, fully built in Chile, signifies a major advancement in sustainable tourism and innovation for both Antarctica21 and the nation. The launch ceremony brought together a diverse group of partners, engineers, and local authorities, celebrating the collaborative effort behind this historic achievement.
Magellan Discoverer: A New Era of Sustainable Travel
The Magellan Discoverer represents Antarctica21’s ongoing commitment to responsible travel and environmental stewardship. Developed in partnership with ASENAV, a leader in Chilean naval engineering, this ship embodies a blend of boutique luxury, advanced technology, and eco-friendly design. Fernando Rodríguez, General Manager of ASENAV, emphasized the significance of this launch, stating, “Today, after many months of hard work, we celebrate the launch of Magellan Discoverer, an achievement that reflects the talent and collaboration of two companies from Chile.” He noted that this vessel positions ASENAV as a benchmark in sustainable engineering and places Chile at the forefront of global maritime innovation.
For Antarctica21, the Magellan Discoverer is not just an addition to their fleet; it symbolizes their deep-rooted connection to the Magallanes region and their mission to redefine Antarctic travel standards. Jaime Vásquez, President of Antarctica21, remarked, “This is a deeply symbolic moment for us. With the launch of Magellan Discoverer, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainable Antarctic tourism and innovation from southern Chile.” He highlighted that the ship represents a technological leap in sustainability and showcases the capabilities of Chilean talent.
Advanced Features for Eco-Friendly Exploration
The Magellan Discoverer is equipped with a state-of-the-art hybrid-electric propulsion system that combines diesel engines with cutting-edge lithium-ion marine batteries. This innovative system significantly reduces CO₂ emissions, minimizes underwater noise, and enhances energy efficiency during voyages. Additionally, the ship features intelligent energy management tools that recycle heat from the engines to warm onboard spaces and recover power from elevators to recharge battery systems. Built to IMO Tier III standards and classified as Polar Class 6, the vessel is designed for safe and sustainable operations in Antarctica’s icy waters.
Measuring 94 meters in length, the Magellan Discoverer accommodates 76 guests and 67 crew members, offering an intimate setting for Antarctic air-cruises. Designed by the renowned Tomas Tillberg Design, the ship’s interiors reflect Antarctica21’s boutique aesthetic, drawing inspiration from the stunning landscapes of Patagonia and Antarctica. With large panoramic windows and sustainably sourced materials, the ship promises a comfortable and immersive polar experience.
Antarctica21’s commitment to innovation and environmental leadership dates back to its founding in Punta Arenas in 2003. The company pioneered the air-cruise model, allowing travelers to fly directly to Antarctica, thus avoiding the tumultuous Drake Passage. This approach not only saves time but also reduces emissions. Since 2019, Antarctica21 has been CarbonNeutral®-certified and continues to invest in sustainable practices, including testing e-Fuels for their Zodiac boats and installing solar panels at their Explorers House expedition center.
Following its successful launch, the Magellan Discoverer will enter the final construction phase, focusing on interior outfitting, navigation system integration, technical trials, and maritime certifications. Scheduled for delivery in September 2026, the ship will commence operations in November 2026, with new Antarctic air-cruises available for booking through early 2028. This vessel not only expands Antarctica21’s fleet but also reinforces their dedication to exploration, sustainability, and their Chilean heritage as they embark on a new chapter in Antarctic travel.
