Fortescue Green Pioneer Arrives into Belem Ahead of COP30
Fortescue's Green Pioneer Champions Zero-Emission Shipping
Fortescue’s Green Pioneer has made a significant arrival in Belém, Brazil, sending a strong message to COP30 participants about the importance of collaboration between industry and regulators in achieving zero-emission shipping. The 75-meter vessel has already journeyed across three continents this year, making stops in major cities including London, Rotterdam, and New York. Fortescue’s Global Head of Marine Systems and Green Shipping, Andrew Hoare, emphasized that ammonia is not just a future fuel but a practical solution available today, showcasing its safe and effective use in maritime operations.
Milestones and Achievements of the Green Pioneer
The Green Pioneer has reached several notable milestones during its global voyage, including becoming the first vessel to operate on ammonia in international waters. This achievement followed successful bunkering operations in the UK, Rotterdam, and Boston, made possible through close collaboration with local authorities and partners. Hoare highlighted that when the Green Pioneer was launched, regulations for using ammonia as a fuel were nonexistent. Today, those guidelines are established, informed by real data and operational experiences, marking a significant step towards global decarbonization.
In recognition of its groundbreaking work, the Green Pioneer was honored as one of TIME’s Best Inventions of 2025. The adoption of ammonia is crucial for reducing the shipping industry’s carbon footprint, which currently accounts for 3% of global emissions and is projected to rise to 10% by 2040. Despite delays in adopting the International Maritime Organization’s Net-Zero Framework, Fortescue remains committed to demonstrating the feasibility of zero-emission fuels and continues to work with governments and industry partners to accelerate the transition to Real Zero.
Brazil’s Role in the Green Energy Transition
The Green Pioneer’s presence in Brazil highlights Fortescue’s dedication to developing a green hydrogen and ammonia value chain, particularly in the Northeast region. With COP30 taking place in Belém, the vessel underscores Brazil’s potential leadership in the global shift towards green energy. By showcasing green ammonia as a viable marine fuel, Fortescue aims to illustrate how Brazil can strengthen its position in the global energy transition.
Fortescue is also advancing the Pecém Project in Ceará, Brazil’s most advanced green hydrogen and ammonia initiative. This project leverages the country’s abundant renewable resources and strategic port infrastructure, positioning Pecém as a key player in building a competitive green industry. The initiative supports Brazil’s goals for decarbonization and reindustrialization, demonstrating the country’s capability to supply the fuels of the future safely and effectively.
