Freire Shipyard Launches Diver Support Vessel for Spanish Navy

Freire Shipyard, a family-owned company in Spain, has officially laid the keel for its first diver support vessel, designated NC 739, under a contract with the Spanish Navy. This new vessel, measuring over 30 meters in length and boasting a range of 500 nautical miles, is set to enhance the training capabilities of the Navy’s Diving School at the Navy Diving Centre.

Strengthening Naval Capabilities Through Collaboration

The keel laying of the NC 739 marks a significant milestone for Freire Shipyard and its partnership with the Spanish Navy. Rear Admiral Francisco Antón Brage, Deputy Director of Engineering at the Logistics Support Headquarters, expressed satisfaction with the shipyard’s adaptability to the Navy’s specific requirements. He emphasized that this collaboration not only strengthens ties with private shipyards but also reinforces the Navy’s commitment to developing a robust national industrial and technological base.

Marcos and Guillermo Freire, general managers of the shipyard, highlighted the importance of this project, stating that it represents the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with the Spanish Navy. They expressed their commitment to enhancing the Navy’s operational capabilities through the construction of this specialized vessel. The NC 739 is expected to improve the Navy’s autonomy and efficiency in various diving operations.

Advanced Features for Enhanced Training

The NC 739 is designed as a state-of-the-art platform to support the Spanish Navy’s Diving School in training across all diving disciplines. Equipped with advanced systems such as DP-2 dynamic positioning, a hyperbaric chamber, and a wet bell, the vessel will facilitate deep diving operations and underwater interventions at depths of up to 90 meters.

The introduction of this specialized vessel will significantly enhance the Navy’s Diving School’s ability to conduct effective training, solidifying the Spanish Navy’s status as a leader in diving instruction both nationally and internationally. Founded in 1895 and located in Vigo, Freire Shipyard has a rich history of constructing steel-hulled vessels, having built over 280 ships for clients in more than 25 countries. Today, the shipyard focuses on high-tech steel vessels, including military patrol boats, offshore support vessels, and luxury yachts, further showcasing its commitment to innovation and excellence in maritime engineering.
