Freire Shipyard lays keel for Spain’s new diver support vessel

Freire Shipyard, a family-owned company in Spain, has officially laid the keel for its first diver support vessel, designated NC 739, under a contract with the Spanish Navy. This new vessel, measuring over 30 meters in length and boasting a range of 500 nautical miles, is set to enhance the training capabilities of the Navy’s Diving School at the Navy Diving Centre.

Strengthening Naval Capabilities

The keel laying of the NC 739 marks a significant milestone for Freire Shipyard and the Spanish Navy. Rear Admiral Francisco Antón Brage, Deputy Director of Engineering at the Logistics Support Headquarters, emphasized the importance of this collaboration. He stated that the project not only strengthens ties with private shipyards but also reinforces the Navy’s commitment to developing a robust national industrial and technological base. The shipyard has successfully adapted to the Navy’s specific requirements and standards, leading to a positive assessment of the partnership thus far.

Marcos and Guillermo Freire, general managers of the shipyard, expressed their enthusiasm for this collaboration. They noted that the keel laying symbolizes the beginning of a fruitful relationship with the Spanish Navy, which they hope to expand through future projects. The new diver support vessel is expected to significantly improve the Navy’s operational capabilities, autonomy, and efficiency.

Advanced Features for Enhanced Training

The NC 739 is designed as a specialized platform to support the Navy’s Diving School in training across various diving disciplines. It will be equipped with cutting-edge technology, including DP-2 dynamic positioning systems, a hyperbaric chamber, and a wet bell. These features will enable the vessel to conduct deep diving operations and underwater interventions at depths of up to 90 meters.

The introduction of this advanced vessel will allow the Diving School to fulfill its training responsibilities more effectively, ensuring that the Spanish Navy remains a leader in diving training both nationally and internationally. Founded in 1895 and located in Vigo, Freire Shipyard has a long history of constructing high-tech steel vessels, having built over 280 ships for clients in more than 25 countries. Today, the shipyard focuses on building and repairing vessels up to 155 meters in length, including military patrol vessels, offshore support vessels, and luxury mega explorer yachts.
