DHL and CMA CGM Join Forces for Sustainable Shipping
DHL Global Forwarding and CMA CGM are making strides in the decarbonization of global container transport by partnering to utilize 8,990 metric tons of UCOME second-generation biofuel. This collaboration is projected to reduce approximately 25,000 metric tons of CO₂e emissions for ocean freight under DHL’s GoGreen Plus service. The initiative aims to help DHL customers lower the carbon intensity of their supply chains while promoting the transition to alternative marine fuels.
Innovative Solutions for Low-Carbon Shipping
DHL’s GoGreen Plus service and CMA CGM’s ACT+ low-carbon transport offering enable shippers to incorporate sustainable maritime transport into their logistics operations. CMA CGM will manage the physical bunkering of the biofuel across its fleet, ensuring that the emission reductions align with DHL’s Book & Claim approach. This service allows customers to significantly decrease well-to-wake emissions by opting for sustainable marine fuel options, achieving reductions of up to 80% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional maritime fuels.
Casper Ellerbaek, Head of Global Ocean Freight at DHL Global Forwarding, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “This partnership marks another milestone in our mission towards low-carbon supply chains. By leveraging sustainable marine fuels, we help our customers achieve their climate goals and drive real progress toward decarbonization.” The joint effort reflects a commitment to enhancing the environmental performance of international shipping.
Shared Commitment to Net Zero Goals
Both companies are dedicated to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Olivier Nivoix, Executive Vice President Shipping at CMA CGM Group, highlighted the significance of their partnership, noting, “Our collaboration with DHL demonstrates how teamwork can accelerate the shift to low-carbon shipping.” CMA CGM has already reduced the carbon intensity of its shipping activities by 57% since 2008 and is investing heavily in alternative fuels and dual-fuel vessels.
The ACT+ initiative from CMA CGM offers customers the ability to lower their carbon footprint by 10%, 25%, 50%, or even up to 83% on a well-to-wake basis through the use of low-carbon fuels. This program also includes carbon offsetting solutions to further enhance sustainability. Meanwhile, DHL’s GoGreen Plus products provide decarbonized solutions across its core offerings, allowing customers to reduce their indirect Scope 3 emissions and report progress on their greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets.
Both DHL and CMA CGM are committed to exploring further opportunities to scale up the use of lower-carbon fuels and develop collaborative strategies to decarbonize international supply chains, marking a significant step forward in the shipping industry’s sustainability efforts.
