Austal USA Begins Construction of Fourth U.S. Navy Landing Craft Utility

MOBILE, Ala. – Austal USA has officially commenced construction on its fourth U.S. Navy Landing Craft Utility (LCU) at its ship manufacturing facility in Mobile, Alabama. The milestone was celebrated on December 18, 2025, marking a significant step in the company’s ongoing commitment to support the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. This initiative follows a $91.5 million contract awarded to Austal USA in September 2023, which includes options for up to 12 LCUs and associated support efforts. So far, construction contracts have been awarded for five of the planned twelve vessels.

Harley Combs, Vice President of Surface Ship Programs at Austal USA, expressed pride in the progress made on these vital connectors for military operations. He emphasized that having four LCUs under construction, with the first scheduled for delivery in early 2026, reflects the company’s dedication to timely delivery. This achievement is attributed to the skilled workforce at Austal USA, which plays a crucial role in the construction process.

Capabilities and Importance of the LCU

The Landing Craft Utility (LCU) vessels are essential for transporting vehicles, personnel, and cargo between amphibious assault ships and shore locations during military operations. These crafts are designed to provide a heavy-lift capability, with a payload capacity comparable to several C-17 aircraft. Their versatility makes them invaluable assets for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, facilitating a range of operations in various environments.

The first vessel, LCU 1710, is part of the four LCUs currently under construction at Austal USA. The LCU program is one of three ongoing production lines at the facility, which also includes three Navy Towing, Salvage, and Rescue Ships (T-ATS) and two Coast Guard Heritage-class Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC). The construction of these vessels underscores Austal USA’s commitment to enhancing the operational capabilities of the U.S. military.

As the construction of the LCU progresses, Austal USA continues to demonstrate its role as a key player in the defense sector, contributing to the modernization and readiness of the U.S. Navy’s amphibious operations. The successful delivery of these vessels will not only bolster military capabilities but also reinforce the strategic importance of amphibious operations in contemporary warfare.
