The 23-year-old American Empress cruise ship, measuring 360 feet in length, is undergoing significant transformation as it is stripped of its superstructure for conversion into a deck barge. This dismantling process commenced last month at Tideline Construction, located at the former 6-Mile mill site. The operation is part of a project managed by Tideline, which specializes in scrap metal recycling and is working on behalf of the ship’s owner, American Cruise Lines.
The conversion of the American Empress marks a notable shift in its purpose, transitioning from a cruise vessel to a functional deck barge.
