ITOCHU and MOL Forge Decarbonization Partnership
ITOCHU Corporation has entered into a strategic partnership with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) to enhance the use of environmental attribute certificates aimed at reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector. This collaboration seeks to address the pressing issue of Scope 3 emissions, which has gained significant attention from companies globally. By leveraging their strengths in air and maritime logistics, both companies aim to create a robust framework that supports decarbonization efforts across the entire transportation supply chain.
Innovative Collaboration for Emission Reduction
The newly signed memorandum marks a significant step in the joint efforts of ITOCHU and MOL to promote environmental sustainability. Both companies will engage in marketing, public relations, and sales initiatives to encourage the adoption of environmental attribute certificates. These certificates serve as a tool for businesses utilizing transportation services to effectively lower their Scope 3 emissions, which include indirect emissions from their supply chains.
ITOCHU is focusing on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), while MOL is advancing the use of low-carbon marine fuels. This partnership represents a pioneering model for decarbonization in Japan, bridging the air and maritime transportation sectors. By collaborating, ITOCHU and MOL aim to establish a comprehensive approach to emission reduction that benefits a wide range of companies relying on transportation services.
As part of their initiative, both companies have engaged in a transaction involving environmental attribute certificates. ITOCHU acquired marine environmental attribute certificates from MOL to offset greenhouse gas emissions linked to maritime transport services. Conversely, MOL purchased air environmental attribute certificates from ITOCHU to mitigate emissions related to employee air travel. This transaction was facilitated through the platform provided by 123Carbon, a Netherlands-based environmental technology firm that ensures the integrity and transparency of certificate transactions.
Commitment to Sustainable Development Goals
ITOCHU’s management policy, titled “The Brand-New Deal: Profit opportunities are shifting downstream,” emphasizes the importance of stakeholder engagement and sustainable practices. The company remains committed to contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by actively promoting initiatives that address environmental challenges. This partnership with MOL not only highlights their dedication to reducing carbon emissions but also sets a precedent for future collaborations in the transportation industry.
