Wärtsilä to Supply Engine and Propulsion Equipment for Hartman Seatrade’s New Heavy Lift Vessel

Wärtsilä Corporation Secures Order for New Vessel

Wärtsilä Corporation, a technology group specializing in marine solutions, has announced a significant partnership with Netherlands-based operator Hartman Seatrade. The collaboration involves the supply of engine and propulsion equipment for a new 3800 DWT heavy lift vessel. The vessel will be constructed at a newly established shipyard called Rock Shipbuilding by the owner, Hartman Seatrade. The order with Wärtsilä was officially booked in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Efficient and Environmentally Friendly Technologies

The new vessel will be equipped with the renowned Wärtsilä 31 engine, known for its exceptional fuel efficiency and minimal exhaust emissions. This engine’s modular design allows for reduced maintenance costs and requirements, offering operational flexibility for both fast and slow steaming operations.

Teele Hartman, Managing Director of Hartman Seatrade, expressed confidence in Wärtsilä’s technology, stating, “Our focus is on efficiency, reliability, and operational flexibility. Wärtsilä engines have consistently performed well across our fleet. The Wärtsilä 31 offers the performance range we need for both slow and fast steaming, combined with low maintenance requirements.”

Enhanced Fuel Efficiency and Operational Flexibility

In addition to the engine, Wärtsilä will supply the gearbox enabling the vessel to operate in PTI, PTO, and PTH modes, further enhancing fuel efficiency. The vessel’s Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) will be optimized with Wärtsilä’s EcoControl technology and hydrodynamically designed with the Opti Design solution. These features will allow for additional fuel savings by operating the propeller at low speed when full thrust is not required. The delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment is scheduled for the spring of 2027.

Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine, highlighted the importance of efficient energy use and advanced equipment in meeting sustainability targets while maintaining profitability. He emphasized, “Efficient energy use and advanced equipment are key to meeting regulations while staying profitable. The Wärtsilä 31 engine, combined with complementary technologies, offers the most logical path forward for cargo operators.”

This collaboration builds on the strong relationship between Wärtsilä and Hartman Seatrade, with Wärtsilä having supplied equipment for several vessels in the company’s fleet.
